SPORT: It’s been cracking the flags once again up here!
Mark Tyndall and Ian Greenwood started their day with the buzzers but soon found the fish were cruising that bit deeper. Mark switched to a DI6 line and found the fish were keen to latch on to olive lures especially the Dawson’s olive. Both guys found Gull Island to be the most productive.
Away from the lure pulling John Sykes had a steady afternoon with 8 fish to the net all coming to the buzzers. Interestingly the action started for John when he took his boat up to the dam area. You may wonder why I find that interesting but as of late the fish have been coming from around the northern shallows in and amongst the willow bushes. That sort of behaviour is very typically of fishing during March.
Now then this warm spell of weather has lifted the water temperature quite a bit and the colder waters have started to mix with warmer waters of the surface. This has an unusual effect on the trout a bit like the end of their hibernation! They move out of shallow water and start to venture out over deeper water as there is no change in water temperature right across the whole reservoir.
This is something that usually happens a little later in the season and is certainly unusual for March! It’s great news for us anglers as the fish will be on the move right around the lake and fresh hot spots should appear by the day!
I still think a bumper score will be coming in on the dries soon and as of Thursday the cloud is moving in
